Ascent Bible Church’s Response to the Covid Pandemic

Hebrews 10:24-25  “24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:  25  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Ascent Bible Church is committed to never hindering or “forsaking the assembling of ourselves together”. Due to the pandemic, we are continually striving to maintain a balance between the need to freely gather and being considerate of anyone affected by COVID. There’s a wide spectrum of attitudes about the use of facemasks as well as social distancing– ranging from very cautious to not worried at all.

As a church, we are committed to responding Biblically. In the book of Romans, Chapter 14, the Apostle Paul clearly outlines the expectation of the believer when considering the attitude of a fellow brother or sister in Christ– Romans 14:19  “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” The passage reveals to us Christ-like qualities of selflessness, respect, and kindness. We simply desire to accommodate all attitudes regardless of their perspective.

In-Person Attendance Guidelines

  • Voluntarily continue to use face coverings indoors when moving around. You are free to remove your mask when sitting or standing in whatever chosen space.
  • Stay home if you have a fever, cough, sinus condition that causes sneezing, or if you have tested positive for the virus within the past 14 days.
  • Stay home if you have underlying health conditions that make you more vulnerable to virus or flu.
  • Stay home if you are not comfortable among those you may not know or for whom you are not assured of their own health issues.
  • Be considerate of any physical contact– hugging, or shaking hands with anyone other than family members; maintain a distance of 6’ from others.
  • Respect boundaries that others wish to keep for their own protection to include any physical contact like hugging or shaking hands.
  • Frequently wash your hands or clean them with hand sanitizer provided at stations in the foyer and sanctuary.

NOTE: We are also diligent in cleaning and sanitizing the facility before services. Hand sanitizer and single-use masks are also available at several locations in our facility. For increased confidence in your personal protection, we encourage you to bring your own hand sanitizer and mask. We also encourage those with greater concerns to select seats at the rear of the sanctuary to minimize exposure to others.

Concern for Spiritual, Mental & Emotional Health of the Church Family

We invite all to attend in-person services who feel an essential need to gather with other believers as a way of preserving their spiritual, mental, and emotional health. We recognize and support that, for these congregants, the risks to spiritual, mental, and emotional health related to isolation and estrangement from other believers are equal to or greater than the risk of the virus to their physical health. It is for this reason and those listed below that we believe a healthy local church is essential to establishing and maintaining a healthy community.

Commitment of Church Leadership to support the Congregation

The Ascent Bible Church leadership team will continue to make every effort to implement public health guidelines and COVID-safe practices to ensure the health and safety of our congregation. For those who cannot presume to risk their health and the health of their loved ones by worshiping in person, we continue to labor to serve them as best as we can by producing the most engaging online worship experience possible. In addition, our staff is available to respond to requests for prayer and to collect and distribute food and other essential goods as needs are communicated. For those who believe they must gather in person to pray, worship, and receive Biblical teaching, our facilities are open for regularly scheduled weekly services. We are committed to keeping our doors open to our congregation and community.

Why Continuing Effective Ministry is Necessary

The following are reasons we believe it is essential for us to responsibly remain open:

  • To families who have lost loved ones to COVID, we offer prayer, loving support, and godly care and counsel, even if they’ve never attended our church.
  • Although COVID has a 99 percent survival rate, we recognize that it disproportionately affects the elderly and those with underlying conditions. We are ready to respond to calls for essential goods and services to people who need to shelter in place.
  • Some of the most vulnerable among us—abused women and children—suffer when quarantined with their abusers, and they desperately need prayer, support, and encouragement during those times.
  • Lockdowns can cause measurable increases in depression, anxiety, and suicide. Individuals and their families who are suffering in this way need prayer, support, and encouragement.
  • Many special needs children cannot receive their therapies, and they and their families need prayer, support, and encouragement.
  • Many people with non-Covid illnesses and diseases have had to delay or forego lifesaving treatments and surgeries, and they and their families need prayer, support, and encouragement.
  • Many people remain food insecure due to unemployment, reduced hours and wages, and forced furloughs, and they and their families need prayer, support, and encouragement.
  • Many people have been forced to close their businesses and forfeit their livelihoods, either temporarily or permanently. A high percentage of our community’s businesses that have closed will never reopen, and these people and their families need prayer, support, and encouragement.
  • Many of our neighbors continue to work from home while homeschooling their children and are still having to pay taxes from their depleted incomes. These families need prayer, support, and encouragement.

In summary, we believe a loving, servant-hearted, and active local church is essential for our community. We want to assure the Ascent Bible Church congregation; our community; and all those in civic authority that we will continue to diligently pray for the Lord’s direction as together we confront this dreaded disease.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 “1  I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  2  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  3  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  4  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”

Thank you,
